Mariachi Vargas Performs to Packed House in Austin’s Long Center

vargas-at-closing
Mariachi Vargas’ appearance in Austin was a huge success thanks to the community who came out and supported the event. It’s evident that Latinos recognize and appreciate the talent of the greatest mariachi in the world – the best of the very best – el mejor mariachi del mundo- Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlan.

One gentleman called to rave about the opening acts with Victoria Acosta (San Antonio), Esteban Velasquez (Odessa) and Virginia Stille (Houston) following the live concert on June 20 at the beautiful Long Center – Dell Hall. Victoria’s rendition of “Viva Mexico” followed by “Crucifijo de Piedra” was powerful he said. She’s young, beautiful and talented and knocked me off my chair he added. He loved the fact that Esteban sang 2 original songs written by Alberto Alvaro, Mariachi Vargas vocalist and violinist. Alberto gave the songs titled “La Broma en Vivo” and “Ladron de Amores” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BIuXN3HDL0k&feature=email to Esteban who did a fabulous job in singing them. He finished up with a cute duet with Virginia Stille called “Me Gustas Mucho.”

It’s a powerful message when young artists are included in these class act productions as opening acts for Mariachi Vargas. People see this young talent as the next generation that will continue the beautiful cultural tradition of mariachi. Live Mariachi Vargas concerts serve as a platform to showcase the best among Hispanic youth. Victoria, Esteban and Virginia have proven themselves as the best of the very best in the US by being selected by members of Mariachi Vargas as the Best Vocalist in the US in the largest student based mariachi vocal competition in the country held as part of the Mariachi Vargas Extravaganza in San Antonio. Presenting young artists not only results in tremendous exposure through publicity and their live concert performances but these opportunities result in invitations to other events throughout the year.

Former Mariachi Vargas member Manuel Vargas also made an appearance and literally brought the house down with the very first note of “Los Laureles.” He sang “Popurri de Jose Alfredo Jimenez” and finished up his set with “Granada.” Manuel Vargas is no doubt the best male mariachi vocalist  in Texas right now and we’re lucky as heck to have him living in San Antonio (our condolences to Manuel Vargas and his family as he just got notice today that his father passed away).

Fiesta Mart and Goya sponsored the event and one of the comments one representative made following the concert during the post event meet and greet at the Radisson Hotel was that Luis Miguel was her all-time favorite artist. But she was amazed with Steeven Sandoval, violinist and vocalist with Mariachi Vargas. She said his voice was better than Luis Miguel! What a great compliment for Steeven!

Where do we go from here? How about to Houston July 18 at the Wortham Center’s Brown Theater where Mariachi Vargas continues their Texas Tour thanks to Fiesta Mart and Goya. Join us for what promises to be another phenomenal concert. This much we know for sure! Tickets are available at Ticketmaster.com.

Esperamos por una concierto espectacular con el mejor Mariachi del Mundo – Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlan – en Houston, Texas July 18.

Austin’s Music Scene gets Mariachis’ Best

Mariachi Vargas set to perform at the Long Center - Dell Hall - Austin, Texas June 20

Mariachi Vargas set to perform at the Long Center - Dell Hall - Austin, Texas June 20

Plan for a special weekend in  Austin June 20 for what promises to be an extraordinary mariachi concert you won’t want to miss. There’s a bit for everyone from young adults to mature audiences. Teens will certainly appreciate the talent of young vocalists Victoria Acosta (San Antonio), Virginia Stille (Houston) and Esteban Velasquez (Odessa) who will be accompanied by UT’s own Mariachi Tejas. Each has significant accomplishments of their own from appearing on international reality TV shows, performing with popular artists to recording professionally. What they all have in common is their rank as the “Best Vocalist in the US” which they won in different years at the Mariachi Vargas Extravaganza held annually in San Antonio. Their performances will demonstrate the enormous talent among Texas youth while showing folks that la musica de mariachi is alive and well among the next generation.

Added recently to the show’s rundown is an “alumnus” of Mariachi Vargas – Manuel Vargas – who will be accompanied by Austin’s best – Mariachi Relampago. Manuel Vargas has the performance style, training and experience of a world class vocalist having played with Mariachi Vargas from 1992 to 2000. Manuel Vargas occasionally shares the stage with Mariachi Vargas during live concert performances when members of Mariachi Vargas often pull him from the audience to join in on a duet. He resides in San Antonio where he manages his own professional mariachi group- Mariachi Sangre Mexicana de Manuel Vargas and lives with his elegant wife Veronica Vargas and talented daughter Angelica.

And El Mejor Mariachi del Mundo, Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlan will play favorites including Para Siempre, Que Bonita es Esta Vida, Por Amor, Como han pasado los años and Estos Celos. If we’re really lucky we may get to hear Arturo Vargas (Mariachi Vargas – tenor)  sing El Pastor or maybe even one of my all time favorites Por ti Volare. Die hard mariachi fans love to hear Mariachi Vargas play instrumental selections like Huapango de Moncayo or Violin Huapango. Whatever Mariachi Vargas’ repertoire is (determined 5 minutes prior to showtime) concert goers are in for a real treat. Not only will Mariachi Vargas perform their latest and greatest songs, but they’ll perform in a state of the art venue called The Long Center which has phenomenal acoustics. Seeing Mariachi Vargas at the Long Center may just be the best injection of happiness I need to get me through the next 30 days – until I get to see them again in Houston at the Wortham Center on July 18.

Need a place to stay? Check out the Radisson Hotel & Suites at Town Lake at www.radisson.com/austintx. I hear there’s a meet and greet with Mariachi Vargas following the concert at the hotel and its the perfect place for  a stroll along the lake Sunday morning! Ahhh, life is beautiful!
