Vanessa Alonzo Announces CD Release Party

Vanessa Alonzo will be having a CD release party for her first CD entitled “Clasicas de Oro,” along with a Valentine’s Day Serenata on Tuesday, February 14 at Doneraki Restaurant in Houston, TX. Vanessa was chosen by members of Mariachi Vargas as the “Best in US” winner of the Mariachi Vargas Extravaganza vocal competition in 1999.

Now, Vanessa is part of the cast of the first Mariachi Opera, Cruzar la Luna de La Cara, a collaboration between the Houston Grand Opera and Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán. Vanessa, along with the Houston Grand Opera and Mariachi Vargas, had the opportunity to take the opera to Paris, France, where they had six remarkable, sold-out performances.

During San Antonio’s 17th Annual Mariachi Vargas Extravaganza, Vanessa was a hit at the vocal mariachi student workshops. Over 1000 mariachi students were registered for the workshops taught by Mariachi Vargas, Vanessa, and other professional mariachi instructors. Vanessa also had the opportunity to perform one of the songs from Cruzar la Cara de la Luna, “El Amor de Lupita,”  with Mariachi Vargas during the two concerts on December 3rd and 4th at the Lila Cockrell Theater. Her performance was definitely phenomenal. Congratulations to Vanessa on her continued success and best of luck with the release of her first CD.

Join in the Christmas Spirit with Serenata en el Rio

Talented mariachi musicians and vocalists are surrounded by thousands of Christmas lights that adorn the Rivercenter Mall Lagoon during performances that start at 6:00 p.m. It’s the Serenata en el Rio on the Riverwalk in the Rivercenter Center Mall Lagoon area off Commerce Street. The experience is similar to Plaza Garibaldi in Mexico City where mariachi groups and vocalists gather around and perform for audiences. The only difference is that it’s free and open to the public and tipping is not expected. The event offers locals the opportunity to officially welcome participating mariachi groups and vocalists who travel from as far away as Boston, Massachusetts to participate in San Antonio’s 17th Annual Mariachi Vargas Extravaganza. It’s a beautiful evening filled with the spirit of Christmas you’ll want to experience with friends, family and loved ones.

“Blessing of Mariachis” set for Nov. 27

The Mariachi Mass at San Fernando Cathedral is the first official event of San Antonio’s 17th Annual Mariachi Vargas Extravaganza. It’s a significant cultural event because the tradition of incorporating mariachi music into Catholic masses in South Texas is quiet common. Also many mariachi musicians who play today began playing mariachi music through the church.
