“Blessing of Mariachis” set for Nov. 27

The Mariachi Mass at San Fernando Cathedral is the first official event of San Antonio’s 17th Annual Mariachi Vargas Extravaganza. It’s a significant cultural event because the tradition of incorporating mariachi music into Catholic masses in South Texas is quiet common. Also many mariachi musicians who play today began playing mariachi music through the church.

Kids at Wesley Study with Mariachi Vargas Member Pepe, Jr.

Children at Wesley Community Center www.mhm.org, located in the Southwest side of San Antonio, had the privilege of studying with

dsc00406

Jose “Pepe” Martinez, Jr. following the Mariachi Vargas concert in Houston on June 18. Pepe, Jr. spent four days teaching mariachi music to 30 or more children at the Center. Students between the ages of six and 18 studied songs like “De Colores,” “Cariño,” “Amor Eterno,” “Se me Olvido Otra Vez” and “Canto a la Madre.” Wesley Community Center made a worthwhile investment in bringing Pepe, Jr. to San Antonio. His 4-day stay ended in a student recital given to their families and community that resulted in an experience that will have a lifelong impact for the entire community. MPR was glad to help make it possible! More photos at http://www.mariachimusic.com/gallery/index.php?album=photos%2F2009-summer-workshops-with-wesley-community-center-san-antonio
