Mark your calendars for July 18th - 23rd for Texas State University’s salsa/mariachi camp in San Marcos. Instrumental and vocal classes will be taught for middle school and high school students from 8:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. by Texas State University’s faculty and students. Felicidades a Jonathan Clark who has recently been hired as the new mariachi director at Stanford University. Jonathan is a long-time mariachi historian, musician and aficionado who has contributed as a guest speaker and consultant to numerous mariachi music conferences and exhibitions throughout the U.S. and Latin America. Stanford is lucky to have him! Congratulations also to Michelle Quintero who is the newest addition to Texas State University’s Multicultural faculty. Michelle is a highly sought after clinician and voice teacher in the San Antonio area who has taught many award-winning mariachi vocalists. Michelle will work closely with John Lopez to continue developing Texas State University’s award-winning mariachi music program.

Sebastian de la Cruz from San Antonio won first place in the mariachi vocal competition held as part of Austin’s Second Annual Mariachi Music Fest. The event took place on the grounds of City Hall on Friday, June 18. Twenty vocalists competed for first, second and third place prizes. Sebastian de la Cruz opened for Mariachi Vargas at the Long Center on June 19.
The University of Texas at San Antonio is planning to expand its mariachi music program by hiring a Director of Mariachi to teach mariachi music and the history of Latin American Music. The position requires help in creating a certificate program for mariachi studies.
San Antonio based Mariachi Los Caporales is currently in Africa performing at the world cup on behalf of Maseca and Hispano USA. The group is following the Mexican soccer team May 12 through June 24 in Africa with performances throughout the country.
Mariachi Los Caporales has been a Texas favorite since 1993. The group was started by its director Roy Quintero who has played mariachi music since the early age of 5.

Organizers of the prestigious Oregon Shakespeare Festival (OSF) have selected student mariachi musicians and vocalists from South Texas to perform during the OSF Green Show July 12-19 in Ashland, Oregon.

Meet Mariachi Samurai de Japon. They’re pretty darn good especially in this YouTube video where they’re playing Serenata Huasteca. According to their website it appears that they perform at a Mexican restaurant in Japan with ballet folklorico dancers.
Mariachi vocalists are wanted for the 2nd Annual Mariachi Music Fest in Austin June 18-19. A mariachi vocal competition will be held in addition to a concert featuring Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlan.
