Competition Winners
2006 Group Competition Winners

Elementary/Middle School  

  • 1st place – From Houston, Texas, Patrick Henry Middle School’s Mariachi Los Patriotas.  This is their 3rd straight win!  They performed a medley or popurrí titled Popurrí En San Antonio Otra Vez (In San Antonio, Again).
  • 2nd place – From Zapata, Texas, Zapata Middle School’s Mariachi Juvenil Halcon. The group performed El Gavilanchillo-El Recurso.
  • 3rd place – From Kyle, Texas and competing for the first time, Mariachi del Campo from Wallace Middle School.  They performed Popurrí de Huapangos.

High School (this category was the most competitive with 14 groups vying for 1st place.  
  • 1st place – Zapata High School’s Mariachi Halcon from Zapata, Texas.  They performed El Siquisiri, La Barca and El Rey de la Huasteca.
  • 2nd place – From El Paso, Texas, Socorro High School’s Mariachi Los Gavilanes – who performed El Gustito
  • 3rd place – San Antonio’s Jefferson High School.  Mariachi Los Potrillo performed Huapango Rubén Fuentes.

College/University Catogory
  • 1st place – Texas State University-San Marcos, Mariachi Nueva Generación with a performance of Del Altar a la Tumba and Popurrí Miguel Aceves Mejía.
  • 2nd place – From San Antonio, Our Lady of the Lake University’s Mariachi OLLU.  The group performed Popurrí Las Tres Huastecas (fyi: OLLU is the only 4-year university to offer a Bachelor of Arts in music with an all-level teacher certification that emphasizes mariachi performance and mariachi instruction).
  • 3rd place – From Brownsville, Texas, University of Texas at Brownsville, Mariachi Luna Azteca with a performance of Popurrí de Gallos and Popurrí A Mi Tierra.
