Rigoberto Mercado An important mission of the Mariachi Vargas Extravaganza, now in its 21st year, is to honor and recognize artists who have made significant contributions to the mariachi genre. This year’s award goes to don Rigoberto Mercado, who played trumpet with Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán for over 25 years. In 1979, as a member of Mariachi Vargas, Rigoberto participated in San Antonio’s (and the world’s) first international mariachi festival. Three and a half decades later, he's taking part in San Antonio’s current mariachi festival, this time as an honoree. (more…)

Betty with Miguel Martínez and Federico Torres at the 2013 Mariachi Vargas Extravaganza Betty Lawrence, known to many as "la abuelita del mariachi" (the mariachi grandmother), passed away on August 4, 2015, at age 89. An ardent fan of mariachi music, Betty had been a frequent figure at mariachi festivals for many years. (more…)

In December of 2014, the mariachi world lost one of its all-time greatest icons, trumpeter extraordinaire Miguel Martínez, often referred to as the “father of the mariachi trumpet.” One of the primary figures in mariachi music of the 20th century, and by far the most influential instrumentalist in the history of the genre, his incomparable legacy encompassed nearly eight decades.
