Eduardo Treviño wows the judges on Season 18 of America’s Got Talent

Eduardo Trevino wowed the judges on America’s Got Talent with his performance of “La Fiesta del Mariachi” on Tuesday, August 8. “The Boy’s a Star” says Terry Cruz followed by Sophia Vergara who told Eduardo “You are amazing. Your presence, your smile, your personality…..I think you’re going to be a charro verdad verdad,” she says.

Eduardo is on Season 18 of America’s Got Talent (AGT) where he is singing mariachi music and representing our mariachi community from across the nation. He audition after AGT reached out to him with an invitation.

Eduardo won 1st place – Middle School Category – in the Mariachi Extravaganza National Vocal Competition last year. Now he is on America’s Got Talent where he performed in front of Sophia Vergara, Howie Mandel, Heidi Klum and Simon Cowell.

I had the opportunity to speak with Eduardo and his mom Rosie via phone and here’s what they had to say after a very exciting week of appearing on AGT.

Cynthia: How are you feeling?

Rosie: Over the moon. It feels amazing. We had an entire watch party on Tuesday with about 100 family and friends who gathered at the Alma Latina Restaurant to watch Eduardo. Humble ISD folks were on hand Zooming live and everyone went wild and started cheering every time they showed Eduardo on AGT.

Cynthia: Eduardo how did you feel about your performance?

Eduardo: I feel wonderful. I was sick the day AGT filmed the segment in Los Angeles and I was on all different kinds of meds. I had gotten sick a few days before the filming and I was really under the weather. I’m not sure if you could tell.

The music director from AGT gave us a time limit of 2 minutes. They edited the piece together so they cut it here and there and I like the way it turned out.

Cynthia: What did they tell you at school?

Eduardo: I just started school at Woodcreek Middle School in Humble ISD and I have 7 classes. In all 7 classes, everyone said “I saw you on Americas Got Talent!!!” The teachers wanted take pictures with me and the principal and assistant principal both commented that they had seen me. My third period teacher said “so weren’t you on AGT?” I said “yes” and she said “oh this is going to be a good year!”

Cynthia: Do you realize that you’re performance on AGT has over 1.5 million views? I think you’re going to need to get a body guard.

Eduardo: My friends Alinah and Aylin are 12 year old twins who have already volunteered to be my body guards (laughs). They’re like my cousins.

Cynthia: Who is the mariachi group accompanying you?

Rosie: Mariachi Nuevo Imperial is the name of the mariachi group and we’ve known them for at least 5 years. They’re based out of Houston and the director and trumpet player is William Zermeño. He and his wife Vianna (violin) are both in the group along with her brother Richard Trevino (guitarron). Zamara Alejandra Martinez is also in the group. She is Eduardo’s vocal coach and plays the vihuela. She’s the director for Humble ISD mariachi. There’s also Severo Lopez who plays the violin. The mariachi group arrived the day before we filmed the AGT segment and we only had one day to practice. We’re very appreciative of their hard work.

Cynthia: Which celebrities did you have a chance to meet?

Eduardo: Terri Cruz, Simon Cowell, Sofia Vergara (I love her) Heidi Klum and Howie Mandel. I  took pictures with Simon Cowell and Terri Cruz before the performance.

Cynthia: Is Sofia Vergara as beautiful in person as she is on TV?

Eduardo: She’s even more beautiful in person.

Cynthia: Eduardo, on behalf of the Mariachi Extravaganza family, and the mariachi community across the nation, we are all so proud of you and want to see you climb to the top on AGT. How can we support you as you continue on AGT and your overall journey?

Rosie: We will be traveling back to Los Angeles with Mariachi Nuevo Imperial in September for the AGT Live Audition and the group will be with us for 4 days. Although AGT covers the cost for hotel, travel and meals for the entire group, we are accepting donations to help cover the musicians and time away from their day jobs. Support is needed for this so we welcome contributions for the mariachi that can be made via a check or Zelle.

Checks can be mailed to:

Cynthia: Is there a chance to see Eduardo perform before he heads out to Los Angeles?

A huge thank you is extended to Hilton Koch ($10K), Marco Gonzalez ($5k) and Greg Compean ($5k) whose contributions are recognized and appreciated by all.

Eduardo has also been recognized at the state level in Austin and by Judge Lena Hidalgo in Houston. He has also sung the National Anthem at the Astros game and the Rockets. The Rockets saw him on ABC News and they contacted his elementary school and invited him to sing.

On a personal note, we had the chance to get to know Eduardo during the Mariachi Extravaganza Summer Camp at the Tobin Center in June. He was one of the stars of the camp. He is super talented and has a beautiful and dynamic personality on and off the stage. He was always so willing to accompany everyone with his guitar and we all fell in love with him this summer.

Eduardo, much luck to you as you continue your journey on AGT. Way to represent the Mariachi Extravaganza, the mariachi community and our beautiful Latino culture!
