UTSA offers New Mariachi Summer Camp this July

This summer, young and rising mariachi students in high school grades 9-12 have the perfect platform to explore their musical passion and refine their skills with the 2024 UTSA Mariachi All-State Summer Clinic. The clinic is a brand-new opportunity that opens this year as the university’s first-ever mariachi summer camp.

Offering students a comprehensive and engaging learning experience, the clinic covers various elements of mariachi music and emphasizes the 2024-2025 TMEA All-State Mariachi excerpts. It is designed to enhance their understanding and practice strategies for the audition material through segmented rehearsals focusing on music.

The camp also prioritizes individual growth and development. Students will receive personalized and group instruction to improve their performance technique and musicianship. From fundamental music instruction to voice training sessions, full mariachi ensemble rehearsals, and sectionals for individual instruments, the program is tailored to deliver an all-encompassing mariachi experience. Students will then conclude their activities with a final concert at the UTSA Recital Hall, showcasing their progress and the music they worked on throughout the week.

UTSA mariachi program director Michael Acevedo and a team of experienced mariachi instructors lead the four-day summer program. Acevedo is responsible for bringing the university’s mariachi program to prominence in recent years.

The UTSA Mariachi All-State Summer Clinic, presented by UTSA Arts and School of Music, will take place in the Arts Building on the Main Campus from July 15 to 18. The camp hours are as follows:

Monday: 11:30 am – 4:30 pm

Tuesday: 12:00 pm – 4:30 pm

Wednesday: 12:00 pm – 4:30 pm

Thursday: 12:00 pm – 5:00 pm (A free 30 minute performance will take place from 4:30 pm – 5:00 pm in the UTSA Recital Hall at the Main Campus off 1604).

Tuition for the clinic is $227.50 and includes a camp t-shirt. The clinic is a day camp, so students must commute to campus. They are also required to bring their own instruments.
