With a legacy that extends over 120 years, the ensemble’s accomplishments have earned them the title of “El Mejor Mariachi del Mundo.” To maintain this level of musicianship, the group has consistently recruited the most elite mariachi musicians from every generation. Playing with Vargas is akin to being part of an Olympic team as they represent Mexico worldwide by performing the country’s music at the highest level possible on the most prestigious stages.
For the past two years, Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán has traveled to more than 180 countries in North America, South America, and Europe as the official mariachi group for Latin superstar Luis Miguel’s tour. In 2023, they released “Mexicano Desde La Raíz,” their most recent studio album, which includes mariachi classics like “Así Somos en Jalisco” and “El Balaju,” along with original works like “Enamórame Otra Vez” and “Sin Ella.”

Since bursting onto the scene in 1995, the Mariachi Extravaganza has become a celebration of Mexico’s signature musical genre, showcasing top-tier performances, thrilling competitions, and enlightening educational workshops. Every winter, San Antonio transforms into a mariachi haven, welcoming over 1,200 students, teachers, professional musicians, and passionate fans from across the nation for the National Group and National Vocal Competitions. Known for its fiercely competitive atmosphere, the festival features school-based mariachi competitions where winners earn a coveted spot in the grand finale concert headlined by none other than Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán.
Mariachi Vargas continues to hold the title as “El Mejor Mariachi del Mundo” as a result of their flawless performances, impeccable arrangements, mesmerizing voices and outstanding musicianship. The group has performed in all but two Mariachi Extravaganza’s in the past three decades. Daniel Martinez, Enrique de Santiago and Gustavo Alvarado have performed since the start of the music festival in 1995.
