Former San Antonio Mariachi Vargas Extravaganza special guest, Nydia Rojas, will be touring with El Rey de la Cancion Ranchera, Vicente Fernandez. The two will headline several concerts in California this month and again later in November.
Nydia Rojas is a California native who has been singing since the age of 9. She made her mark in the South Texas Tejano scene when she and Ricardo Castillon scored a beautiful rendition of “Hay Unos Ojos” and benchmarked their career with sales of upwards of 50,000 units of that recording and video. Nydia and Ricardo reunited on stage for the first time in more than a decade in 2009 during San Antonio’s Mariachi Vargas Extravaganza. It’s one of the best performances that has ever been featured in the event. Tejanos throughout South Texas just can’t get enough of this song which still tops the Best 50 songs of All Time.
Nydia released her 1st major label album at only 15 years old. She quickly gained praise as she performed throughout the country, establishing her as one of best latin female vocalists of her generation. She was invited to perform for President Clinton during his inauguration, and later that year, she was declared a “sensation” by USA Today, and an artist “destined to become a crossover smash” by Billboard Magazine. In the next five years another three solo albums followed. At the age of 20, Nydia’s third album, Si Me Conocieras, was nominated for a Latin Grammy award. Soon afterward, she embarked on several national tours with Mexico’s most adored superstar Juan Gabriel. This collaboration led to her fourth album, NYDIA, which for the first time took more of a mainstream direction while displaying all of Nydia’s fine musical skills. Gabriel graciously sang two duets with Nydia on this album and named her one of the best interpreters of his music from her generation.
