Happy Dies y Seis everyone! The Instituto Cultural de Mexico is producing a spectacular show Monday, September 15 at 6:30 p.m. at the Municipal Auditorium for a Dies y Seis celebration. The Guadalajara-based recording artist AZUCENA will perform with the accompaniment of Mariachi Sangre Mexicana de Manuel Vargas. The Mariachi Extravaganza team is making it possible for AZUCENA to spend Tuesday morning visiting high schools to promote cultural preservation and education through mariachi music. AZUCENA stays true to her heart in promoting, singing and recording mariachi music despite entertainment industry pressure to record banda and other types of Latin musical genres. AZUCENA opened for Mariachi Vargas in December 07 at the San Antonio Municipal Auditorium. Welcome back to San Antonio AZUCENA!
If you caught the Alma Awards produced and hosted by Eva Longoria Parker on Friday, September 12, you had a chance to see LUCERO perform with Mariachi Los Camperos de Nati Cano who accompanied her during a special tribute to Linda Ronstadt. It was inspiring to see some of the best mariachis on mainstream English television (ABC). Congratulations to David Chavez and NCLR for bringing this phenomenal talent and more to general market television. This kind of exposure will have a significant impact in the mariachi music industry! In fact I’m getting phone calls from entertainment industry companies in Los Angeles looking for original mariachi pieces to include in an increasing number of TV programs with Hispanic content such as Ugly Betty and Weeds. Also making news in the mariachi biz is the pride of Odessa Esteban Velasquez who was selected by Mariachi Vargas as the 2007 “Best Vocalists in the US” during the Mariachi Extravaganza in San Antonio. Esteban is the only Texan competing in the international show La Academia.
