A mariachi vocal competition will be held on the plaza of City Hall in Austin, Texas on Friday, June 18 as part of Austin’s Second Annual Mariachi Music Fest.
Members of the internationally acclaimed Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlan will judge the vocal competition. Nearly 35 vocalists from throughout Texas are expected to compete. Participants will be judged for vocal technique, intonation, performance style and stage presence. Each participant will receive a Certificate of Participation signed by Austin’s Mayor Lee Leffingwell. First, second and third place winners will also be selected.
Interested participants must complete a registration form prior to a June 1 deadline. For a copy of the registration form email sandra@mariachimusic.com. The competition will be held outdoors on the plaza of City Hall at 301 W. Second St. starting at 1:30 p.m. Parking is free in the City Hall Garage between 11:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Vocalists may compete with a live mariachi group accompaniment or with a music bed.
Austin’s Second Annual Mariachi Music Fest runs June 17-19. The event is sponsored by Fiesta Mart with support from Goya, Casa Garcia, The Radisson Hotel and Suites Town Lake, KAKW-TV – Univision, Univision Radio and the City of Austin.
