Two South Texas Mariachi youth vocalists are invited to be part of a 3-day residency program in Ann Arbor, Michigan November 3-6, 2010, leading up to a concert by Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlan on November 6. Sebastien De La Cruz, a student at Paschall Elementary in San Antonio, and Karenn Lazo, a student at Roma High School in Roma, were invited by the University Music Society (UMS) in Ann Arbor, Michigan to participate in this program after each won vocal competitions in Texas. Sebastien was selected by the internationally acclaimed Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlan as first place winner in a mariachi vocal competition held in Austin this June, and Karenn was the first place winner of the 2009 Mariachi Vargas Extravaganza High School Vocal Competition in San Antonio last November. Both students will perform in schools and at the prestigious Hill Auditorium for a presentation to students from the Detroit area and will participate in a performance exchange and dinner with local Mariachi Groups and the Mexican Community in Southwest Detroit. The all expense paid trip is made possible by UMS in association with the live concert featuring the world renowned and Mexico City based Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlan on November 6. Congratulations to Karenn and Sebastien for representing South Texas in Michigan this Fall.
