Mariachi Vargas’ appearance in Austin was a huge success thanks to the community who came out and supported the event. It’s evident that Latinos recognize and appreciate the talent of the greatest mariachi in the world – the best of the very best – el mejor mariachi del mundo– Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlan.
One gentleman called to rave about the opening acts with Victoria Acosta (San Antonio), Esteban Velasquez (Odessa) and Virginia Stille (Houston) following the live concert on June 20 at the beautiful Long Center – Dell Hall. Victoria’s rendition of “Viva Mexico” followed by “Crucifijo de Piedra” was powerful he said. She’s young, beautiful and talented and knocked me off my chair he added. He loved the fact that Esteban sang 2 original songs written by Alberto Alvaro, Mariachi Vargas vocalist and violinist. Alberto gave the songs titled “La Broma en Vivo” and “Ladron de Amores” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BIuXN3HDL0k&feature=email to Esteban who did a fabulous job in singing them. He finished up with a cute duet with Virginia Stille called “Me Gustas Mucho.”
It’s a powerful message when young artists are included in these class act productions as opening acts for Mariachi Vargas. People see this young talent as the next generation that will continue the beautiful cultural tradition of mariachi. Live Mariachi Vargas concerts serve as a platform to showcase the best among Hispanic youth. Victoria, Esteban and Virginia have proven themselves as the best of the very best in the US by being selected by members of Mariachi Vargas as the Best Vocalist in the US in the largest student based mariachi vocal competition in the country held as part of the Mariachi Vargas Extravaganza in San Antonio. Presenting young artists not only results in tremendous exposure through publicity and their live concert performances but these opportunities result in invitations to other events throughout the year.
Former Mariachi Vargas member Manuel Vargas also made an appearance and literally brought the house down with the very first note of “Los Laureles.” He sang “Popurri de Jose Alfredo Jimenez” and finished up his set with “Granada.” Manuel Vargas is no doubt the best male mariachi vocalist in Texas right now and we’re lucky as heck to have him living in San Antonio (our condolences to Manuel Vargas and his family as he just got notice today that his father passed away).
Fiesta Mart and Goya sponsored the event and one of the comments one representative made following the concert during the post event meet and greet at the Radisson Hotel was that Luis Miguel was her all-time favorite artist. But she was amazed with Steeven Sandoval, violinist and vocalist with Mariachi Vargas. She said his voice was better than Luis Miguel! What a great compliment for Steeven!
Where do we go from here? How about to Houston July 18 at the Wortham Center’s Brown Theater where Mariachi Vargas continues their Texas Tour thanks to Fiesta Mart and Goya. Join us for what promises to be another phenomenal concert. This much we know for sure! Tickets are available at Ticketmaster.com.
