This summer, San Antonio’s Mariachi Vargas Extravaganza will be featured in a captivating one hour documentary called “Mariachi High,” which will air nationally on PBS as part of the PBS Arts Summer Festival Series. “Mariachi High” paints a portrait of growing up Mexican American by relaying the experiences of champion high school mariachi musicians in South Texas.
This documentary was filmed in Zapata, Texas and also captured spectacular performances at Extravaganza events in 2009 and 2010 and during the Corpus Christi Mariachi Music Festival in 2010. “Mariachi High” captures the struggles and triumphs of passionate young musicians and their mentors while showcasing how the students’ participation in mariachi music programs motivates them to succeed. Congratulations to Zapata High School’s Mariachi Halcon and all other mariachi music programs featured in this documentary. This is a fantastic opportunity to highlight our Mexican culture and traditions, as well as South Texas mariachi music programs on a national scale.
