Registration for 7th Annual Mariachi Extravaganza Summer Camp is now open!

This year’s week-long Mariachi Extravaganza Summer Camp will be held from June 18-22, 2018 at the Tobin Center for the Performing Arts’ Carlos Álvarez Theater, located in San Antonio, Texas. Once again, we have the luxury of hosting the camp here in San Antonio’s newest state-of-the-art performing arts complex, located right on the River Walk!

Now in its seventh year, the Mariachi Extravaganza Summer Camp has served as an important steppingstone for many Mariachi Vargas Extravaganza National Vocal Competition finalists and winners. It is an extraordinary learning experience for anyone interested in finding their voice, or in simply becoming a better vocalist. It is also a wonderful place for youth to gain greater appreciation for the culture and traditions of our Hispanic heritage. Vocalists of all levels will find this camp helpful in furthering their artistic development.

This year’s instructors will include Mariachi Summer Camp favorites Octavio Moreno and Vanessa Alonzo. Both are cast members of the Houston Grand Opera company’s two mariachi operas: Cruzar la Cara de la Luna and El Pasado Nunca se Termina.

Alexa Posas from Roma, Jizelle Rodríguez from Kyle and William “Carlton” Gálvez from San Antonio are three former Mariachi Vargas Extravaganza vocal champions who attended this camp in their formative years. Here’s what they have to say about it:

“Octavio is an amazing vocal instructor, singer and performer. He has a great way of explaining vocal tips and techniques for everyone to understand. It doesn’t matter if you’re in elementary, middle school, high school or college/university, Vanessa and Octavio have an incredible drive to help everyone improve.”
—William “Carlton” Gálvez

“I attended the vocal camp for many years when I was in high school. It’s one of my favorite times of the year!”
—Alexa Posas

“Last year was my second time attending the camp, and I really had a great time. I met a lot of people from all over the U.S., made new friends and learned from the very best. I recommend this camp to anyone who is interested in learning how to work with a group or improve as a solo artist. I did, and I’m very grateful for the time I had with Octavio and Vanessa.”
—Jizelle Rodríguez

Early registration costs $150 and ends on May 8. After that, late registration will be open until June 8, with an increased fee of $200. Be sure to register early to take advantage of the early registration rate. Remember, space is limited to the first 60 students who register!!!!!!!

The Mariachi Extravaganza Summer Camp culminates in a public recital with camp participants on Friday, June 23 at the Carlos Álvarez Theater, located at 100 Auditorium Circle in downtown San Antonio. This is a public, ticketed event for family, friends and the community. Tickets will be available at tobincenter.org for $20, or may be purchased at the time of registration prior to May 8 for only $15. Tickets purchased on the day of the event (June 22) are $25. Since theater seating is limited, in order to secure a ticket, we encourage parents to purchase these at the time of registration. Vocal camp participants do not need a ticket.
