Dear friends, the Latin Music Studies area at Texas State University will present an encore performance of “Soy Mexicano” at the Magik Theatre in San Antonio TX on September 14 & 15. Soy Mexicano is an original stage production for Mariachi written by Pedro Moreno, Michelle Quintero and John Lopez. This show was first performed at TXST’s Feria del Mariachi in May of 2019 to an amazed and enthusiastic audience. Performers include: Sebastien De La Cruz, Mia Gonzalez, Mariachi Nueva Generacion, Grupo Folklorico Ocotochtli & Mariachi Lince de Oro.
The story of “Soy Mexicano” follows 2 Mexican-American high school seniors, Art (played by Sebastien De La Cruz) and Brenda (played by Mia Gonzales) as they visit Mexico for the first time. Their grandparents came to the U.S. from Mexico decades ago seeking greater opportunities for their children. Growing up in the United States, Art and Brenda had minimal exposure to Mexico and its music. The summer before their senior year, they are traveling with their families to Mexico for a family reunion. This is the first time traveling outside the country for Art and Brenda but they are looking forward to the vacation. However, they are naturally apprehensive because of all the current redirect they’ve been exposed to regarding Latin American countries. Come join Art and Brenda as we all experience the music, dance and culture of Mexico through their young eyes.
