MVE winners benefit from more than $20,000 in grants awarded!

Since 1995, the Mariachi Vargas Extravaganza has promoted mariachi music and its culture through student workshops and competitions. Mariachi programs from all over the nation plan out their year to participate in this week long event where they have the opportunity to learn and be judged by the best mariachi in the world, Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán.

It is important to the Mariachi Vargas Extravaganza to preserve and promote the beauty of this musical genre. Since 2007, the production team behind this amazing event has worked hard to create scholarships and performance grants that now exceed the amount of $100,000 towards mariachi music education. Throughout the years, many students have benefitted from these grants. Grants have also supported the Mariachi Extravaganza Summer Camp in San Antonio in June.

With the help of sponsors like Gonzaba Medical Group, H-E-B, Valero, and even individual contributors, these grants are awarded to students to develop their study of mariachi music. This year, through a collaborative initiative with the University Music Society (UMS) in Ann Arbor, Michigan, more than $20,000 in performance grants, travel opportunities and prizes was awarded to the winners of the National Vocal and Group competitions during the 25th Annual Mariachi Vargas Extravaganza.

Congratulations to the recipients of this years’ awards that were awarded to individuals and winners of the National Vocal Competition:

Mariachi Nuevo Santander from Roma, TX, winners of the National Group Competition will represent the Mariachi Vargas Extravaganza in Ann Arbor, Michigan where they will have the honor of opening up for Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán in public performances and in two concerts at the prestigious Hill Auditorium. A  $14,000 grant will be applied towards travel expenses for Mariachi Nuevo Santander. Kaylee Bucio also received a travel grant of $1,500 to open for Mariachi Vargas in Chicago on Feb. 15.

Thanks to our sponsors and to the individuals who have contributed towards these performance and travel grants to support the continuous growth, development and preservation of mariachi music:
