The Roswell Symphony Orchestra recently announced a virtual concert alongside Mariachi Aztlán from the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. The New Mexico-based presenting organization and Mariachi Aztlán are already in the production phase of this project and tickets for the performance on Saturday, May 8th are on sale now at the discounted price of $15!
The production is titled Cuando México Canta and will consist of a diverse and wide range of musical genres and performance styles. Mariachi Aztlán will showcase traditional and regional celebrations, display the historical and cultural influences of Mexican folk music with both indigenous and European roots, and celebrate musical icons and major composers of mariachi music. The production will also feature dance performances by UTRGV’s Ballet Folklórico group.

In addition to the virtual concert, the Roswell Symphony Orchestra will also commission Mariachi Aztlán to produce six educational mariachi tutorials for beginning and advanced mariachi instrumentalists, as well as four master classes that will be hosted live online through a selected video conferencing software.
Mariachi Aztlán was founded by Dr. Dahlia Guerra, Assistant Vice-President of Public Art at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, and is co-directed by Mr. Francisco Loera, who is on the faculty of the School of Music. The university’s Ballet Folklórico is directed by Miguel Peña.
This production was made possible with the help of a grant awarded to the Roswell Symphony Orchestra by the National Endowment for the Arts. The organization was one of 42 recipients of the grant nationwide, and will enable it for the collaboration with Aztlán and the Ballet Folklórico.
