Vanessa Alonzo is a singer/songwriter, opera singer, and mariachi musician from Houston, Texas. In 1999, while a senior at John H. Reagan High School in Houston – now Heights High School – she captivated the judges of the Mariachi Vargas Extravaganza with her interpretation of La Cigarra during the Nation Vocal Competition, which earned her the Title of Grand Champion Vocalist. Since then, Vanessa has had a successful career in music, and is being featured in various upcoming projects of 2021 and 2022.
El Milagro del Recuerdo
El Milagro del Recuerdo is the prequel to the mariachi opera Cruzar la Cara de la Luna, a tale about a Mexican American man who rediscovers the meaning of family due to the approaching death of his Mexican father. Alonzo will play the role of Lupita, a mariachi singer and friend of the protagonist’s first wife.

Concerts at the Consulate
In collaboration with the Consulate General of Mexico in Austin, the Austin Opera just announced a series of concerts that will feature Latin entertainment and culture.The free series is curated by the renowned Mexican mezzo-soprano and Austin resident Claudia Chapa. Alonzo will perform on Nov. 1 along with San Antonio based mariachi Trio Chapultepec.

MECA’s Dia de los Muertos Festival
Now in its twenty-first anniversary, MECA’s event has flourished into a month-long event of festivities. It features altar and retablo exhibitions, community workshops, and a two day virtual festival. MECA’s 2021 Día de los Muertos will be held at MECA’s colorful, art-filled campus located at the nationally recognized Historic Dow School in the heart of Houston’s Old Sixth Ward. Alonzo will be featured in a performance with her rock band Los Guerreros de la Musica.

She was considered a “Standout” by the StarTribune when she performed at the Loons’ stadium in September.
