The company currently has ten centers in Texas with five of them in San Antonio. “Cano Health contributes to the quality of life for our seniors by investing in cultural events like the Mariachi Vargas Extravaganza,” says Dr. Marlow Hernandez, Founder and CEO, Cano Health. “This event has a longstanding history in San Antonio and provides the highest quality of mariachi music entertainment. It’s music that touches the heart and soul of our seniors and a tradition that is deeply rooted in the community,” he added.
The Mariachi Vargas Extravaganza is one of the largest and longest-running mariachi music festivals in the United States. Since 1995, the event has been held annually in San Antonio and appeals to multi-generational audiences from throughout the U.S. The music festival is an opportunity to experience stellar performances and share in the vision of preserving, promoting and cultivating the mariachi music tradition.
At center stage, is the 14-member, world-renowned, Mexico-City based Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán. This group plays an instrumental part in every aspect of the Mariachi Vargas Extravaganza from performing in concert to conducting various workshops and judging fierce national mariachi group and vocal student competitions.
The Mariachi Vargas Extravaganza National Competitions attract nearly 1,000 student mariachi musicians from throughout the U.S. and are the most competitive in the world and the only ones judged by members of Mariachi Vargas. “It’s a huge honor to perform in front of members of Mariachi Vargas and have the opportunity to open for the group in concert as winners,” says Eloy Garza, Director of Mariachi Nuevo Santander from Roma High School in Roma, Texas and six-time, first-place winners of the National competition.
During its nearly three decades of existence, the Mariachi Vargas Extravaganza has helped define and articulate the cultural landscape of San Antonio and South Texas, reinforcing and revitalizing Hispanic identity. While the city of San Antonio is the undisputed birthplace of the U.S. mariachi festival movement, the entire South Texas region is widely considered the world’s principal hotbed of mariachi education, with the largest per capita number of school mariachi programs anywhere on the planet. The Mariachi Vargas Extravaganza has been an integral and indispensable part of this movement, on local as well as regional, national, and international levels.
Additional support for the 27th Annual Mariachi Vargas Extravaganza is provided by H-E-B, KHS America, Whataburger and Texas Public Radio.
