The Mariachi Extravaganza is one of the most significant mariachi music competitions and festivals in the world. It’s an annual event that has taken place in San Antonio for 30 consecutive years. The multi-day music festival celebrates the culture and history of Latin music and utilizes the mariachi music platform to promote higher education and cultural preservation among Hispanic youth. The festival hosts a concert with world-renowned musicians and winners of the highly competitive National group and vocal competitions.

National Mariachi Competitions:
The National Vocal Competition
The top vocal finalists vie for the Grand Champion title during the 30th Annual Mariachi Extravaganza National Vocal Competition. Exceptionally talented vocalists compete in one of three categories: Elementary/Middle School, High School and College/University. Finalists adorn traditional trajes and elegant, Mexican-inspired dresses while demonstrating vocal talent and skills with traditional mariachi songs and live mariachi accompaniment. Excitement builds with one great performance after another where nearly 40 students showcase their skills in front of an expert panel of judges and a live audience. Judges select first, second and third place winners in each category, but the thrill of the event, is the announcement of the Grand Champion Vocal winner! Mark your calendar and plan to attend the National Vocal Competition which is one of the highlights of the 30th Annual Mariachi Extravaganza.
The National Group Competition
Middle school, high school, and College/University mariachi groups compete for the top prize in the largest, longest-running, and most competitive student mariachi competitions in the world. It’s the largest gathering of the most talented musicians, who convene in San Antonio annually, to showcase their musical talent and performance excellence. Expect to see student mariachi groups, from throughout the U.S., in thoroughly enjoyable performances. Come be a part of the energy and excitement that is contagious!
The competitions take place at the Lila Cockrell Theatre prior to the Mariachi Extravaganza concert. The competitions are open to the general public and tickets may be purchased at the door.
