The Mariachi Extravaganza is excited to announce its expansion to the western part of the United States by hosting group and vocal competitions in the city of Las Vegas. This production is made possible through a collaboration between The University Nevada Las Vegas and Muñoz Public Relations with the support of KHS Alianza Academica. The competitions are open to any High School or Middle School groups or vocalists in the country. See you all in Vegas!

Registration Rates and Deadlines
Vocal Competition / Dec. 15 – January 31 / $25
Group Early Registration / December 15 – January 31 / $300
Group Registration / February 1 – 22 / $350
Group Late Registration – February 23 – March 2 / $400
Cancellation Policy
Any cancellations between Feb, 1-22 will incur a 25% fee of your total registration. No cancellations will be accepted after February 22.
Rules and Regulations
Rules by category:
- Grade levels will determine the category each group or vocalist will compete in.
- Elementary: 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th
- Middle School: 6th, 7th, 8th
- High School: 9th, 10th, 11th, 12th
Vocal Competition Performance Rules:
- Competitors must be enrolled in an elementary school, middle school or high school to participate.
- All competitors must register using the registration link above.
- To compete, you must first submit an audition video. The video should be recorded and NOT edited, then uploaded to YouTube.
- All performances must be 4:00 minutes in length or less. Only complete songs are accepted. Popurrís or medleys are not permitted.
- Submissions must be recorded using a live mariachi, guitar, or a pista. Entries submitted with keyboards, or other non-traditional mariachi accompaniment will be disqualified.
- Submit your YouTube video link on the vocal registration form on the line that reads “Insert YouTube Video Link.” ONLY YouTube video submissions will be accepted.
- Vocal competition registration fees are non-refundable.
- Selected Competition Finalists must compete with the same song submitted in the audition.
- Selected Competition Finalists may be accompanied by a mariachi group or a pista.
Group Competition Performance Rules:
- A minimum of 10 musicians are required to compete in the group competition.
- ALL directors MUST submit their group’s performance set list on their registration forms. It is important that the judges have the correct names of the songs the group will perform.
- Each student on stage must play an instrument during the performance.
- Only in the Middle School category are directors allowed on stage prior to their group’s performance to help set up microphones and must leave before the performance begins.
- High School directors are not allowed on stage during competitions or during the concert.
- If a high school group director walks on stage during the competition, that group will be DISQUALIFIED at the discretion of the production team.
- Competing groups must adhere to the following time limits:
- Middle School: 5-7 minutes
- High School: 7-10 minutes
- Time will begin after the first note is played regardless of whether or not that note is part of the performance. (Ex: Speaking “test” into the microphone, playing a note to check if the microphone is on, any word spoken into the microphone by a member of our group).
- Groups competing under or over the allotted time limits can be disqualified at the discretion of the production team.
Audio production rules:
- Please see stage plot below
- All microphones will be labeled
- Microphone stand height can be adjusted for performance.
- Any wired microphones CANNOT be moved from its designated spot.
- Only wireless microphones can be moved around the stage.
- All groups will play using the sound levels set during sound check that same day.
- Sound technician will adjust levels accordingly during performance.
- No one is allowed in the sound booth except approved staff and audio technicians.
- Any one found in the sound booth affiliated to a competing group can jeopardize the group’s ability to compete and may put the group in risk of disqualification.
Disqualification Process:
Any group that breaks any of the rules listed above can be disqualified at the discretion of the event production team. Aside from the judges, there will be staff responsible to make sure each group is following competition rules. If your group is flagged for disqualification you will be notified prior to results being announced and allowed rebuttal with the production team.
Reporting a violation of the rules and regulations:
As a mariachi director, if at any point you believe another group has violated the rules and regulations of the competition, you can make a formal appeal to the event production team by following these steps:
- Report to the event information table in the lobby of the theatre and request to speak to one of the event producers to report a violation of the rules and regulations.
- You will then be given a time to meet with the event production team privately to present your case.
- The event production team will then conduct an investigation prior to any results being announced.
- After the investigation is over, you will be notified of the results of your report.
Winners
First place winners of the competition will be granted the opportunity to open up the Mariachi Extravaganza Concert that same night.
