Trumpeter Jorge Alberto Aguayo hails from Nochistlán, Zacatecas, a town famous for outstanding trumpet players. Born into a family of mariachi musicians, at age 13 young Jorge began studying the trumpet, and at age 15, he started playing with a series of local mariachis. In 1997 he moved to Guadalajara, where he played with mariachis Moya, Nuevo Instrumental, Jalisciensce de Roberto Pinzón and Los Toritos.
In 2001, Jorge moved to Mexico City, where for almost two years he played alongside Andrés González in Mariachi América de Jesús Rodríguez de Híjar, before moving back to Nochistlán to join Mariachi Los Pérez. In 2006, he returned to Guadalajara, where he spent the next six years as a member of Mariachi San Francisco.
In 2012, Jorge traveled to southern California, where he worked with Mariachi Internacional de México until December of 2015. In January of 2016, Mariachi Vargas director Carlos Martínez, whom he’d recorded with previously, invited Jorge to audition for Mariachi Vargas, where he remains today.
“Every time I’ve left one group to join another,” comments Jorge, “it’s been in the interest of progress. But Vargas is very different from any other mariachi I’ve ever played with. The way the public treats you and pays attention to every detail of what you play is something I’ve never experienced before. My goal is to remain with this group for as long as I can.”
