Texas has long been famous for producing some of the finest young mariachi groups in the world, and Vikki Carr’s production team decided to tap this pool of outstanding talent for this concert. The group they chose, Mariachi Aztlán, from the University of Texas‑Río Grande Valley in Edinburg, Texas, has a résumé that includes numerous awards from the Mariachi Vargas Extravaganza and other mariachi festivals.

Past performances by Mariachi Aztlán include concerts at the Hollywood Bowl, the John F. Kennedy Performing Arts Center, and a presentation of the mariachi opera Cruzar la Cara de la Luna with the Houston Grand Opera. Aztlán has performed with two symphony orchestras in Mexico, and with the (Río Grande) Valley Symphony in the U.S.

Recent Mariachi Aztlán presentations include an encore performance with the Chicago Lyric Opera and a guest performance at Albuquerque’s Mariachi Spectacular, as well as at the San Diego Mariachi Festival. For the past four years, Aztlán has toured New Mexico as the featured group for the Mariachi Christmas shows. More recently, they premiered the new mariachi opera El Pasado Nunca Se Termina, and performed at the Tucson International Mariachi Conference and the Chicago International Mariachi & Folklorico Festival.

Last year, Mariachi Aztlán released its latest CD, Mi Nombre es México, in commemoration of the University of Texas-Rio Grande Valley mariachi program’s 25th anniversary. The program was founded by Dr. Dahlia Guerra, Dean of the College of Arts and Humanities at UTRGV, and is directed by Prof. Francisco Loera, a faculty member of the Department of Modern Languages and Literature and the Department of Music and Dance.
