The 5th Annual Mariachi Extravaganza Summer Camp takes place June 20-24 at the Tobin Center for the Performing Arts’ Carlos Álvarez Theater, where dozens of students, ages 10-24, will gather to hone their skills in mariachi music performance. Grammy award winner Vikki Carr, Mexican-born baritone Octavio Moreno and Houston native Vanessa Cerda Alonzo are among the accomplished singers who will teach students during the camp.

The Mariachi Extravaganza Summer Camp is an extension of the Mariachi Vargas Extravaganza music festival held annually in San Antonio. The festival hosts the largest and longest-running mariachi vocal competitions in the nation, and is one of the most renowned festivals of its kind worldwide. The Mariachi Extravaganza Summer Camp helps prepare students interested in competing in the Mariachi Vargas Extravaganza Vocal Competition, as well as introducing new students to this exciting musical genre. Students participating in the camp will have the opportunity to develop their skills in stage presence, projection, diction, public speaking and overall performance. The camp is open to mariachi musicians and vocalists of all levels.

Students from McAllen, Río Grande City, Roma, Houston and San Antonio, Texas; El Granada, California; Little Rock, Arkansas and other cities throughout the U.S. are scheduled to participate in the camp that runs Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The students will perform in a public showcase on Friday, June 24 at 7 p.m. at the Tobin Center for the Performing Arts’ Carlos Álvarez Theater. The recital will include artistic performances featuring students singing both in individual and group settings. Tickets can be purchased at the tobincenter.org.
