A huge thanks to everyone involved in submitting entries for the 22nd Annual Mariachi Vargas Extravaganza National Vocal Competition. We sincerely appreciate all the time and effort that went into preparing this year’s submissions. Selecting finalists has never been an easy task due the incredible amount of talent and strong interest in mariachi music from students throughout the U.S!!! The sheer number of entries submitted this year (25% higher than last year) broke all records and the competition is tougher than ever, especially in the middle school and high school categories. Because of this, entries were scrutinized by preliminary judges more than ever before.
Special thanks to Federico Chávez-Blanco (TV and film composer), Rigoberto Mercado (former member of Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán), Dr. Rachel Cruz (Instructor) and Jonathan Clark (mariachi historian) for listening to each and every entry. Your time and attention to every detail contributes to making this event the absolute best!
Most of all, we’d like to thank every student who submitted an entry this year. If you made it to the list of finalists, congratulations! There is much to prepare for this year’s event and we hope that notifying you, a few days early, will be helpful. For those who did not make the list, please keep trying and striving towards improvement. DO NOT GIVE UP! Remember that you are a winner because you participated. If you’d like feedback regarding your submissions, we will be more than happy to offer suggestions on how to prepare your entry next year. Federico Chávez-Blanco will be present during the vocal workshops on Friday, December 2, at the Lila Cockrell Theatre, to provide feedback to those interested. Our goal is help everyone succeed!
