Congratulations to Roma High School’s award-winning Mariachi Nuevo Santander from Roma, Texas! The group has auditioned for Season 12 of America’s Got Talent, and we want to take a moment to wish them good luck. My prediction is that this group will do quite well. They have not only proven themselves as one of the top performing mariachi groups during the Mariachi Vargas Extravaganza each year, but they have also created a performing arts program that is second to none in the nation. Pair these guys up with with any high school performing arts group of any kind, and they will definitely hold their own. They are perfectionists at every level, and they have an outstanding mariachi music program that is supported by virtually their entire city (population: 9,929).
Caption for video above: Mariachi Nuevo Santander performs “Tema/Mariachi de Corazón” and “El Balajú” during the 22nd Annual Mariachi Vargas Extravaganza with the members listed below. Their performance resulted in a first place win in the High School category for them during the Mariachi Vargas Extravaganza National Mariachi Group Competition.
Fifteen students from Roma High School were part of the initial audition that took place at the Pasadena Theater in Los Angeles. This included 11 males and 4 females — two of whom are grand champion winners of the Mariachi Vargas Extravaganza Vocal Competition. Alexa Posas won in 2015, and Jackelyn Barrera won in 2014.
Mariachi Nuevo Santander’s phenomenal talent will be shared with viewers across America during the season 12 premiere of America’s Got Talent, to be broadcast at 8 pm on Tuesday, May 30. If they make it past the first round, it will be the first time America will see a youth-driven mariachi group on one of the top three English-language television networks. Spanish-language television networks will be sure to follow NBC’s lead in capturing the mariachi music phenomenon that is so pervasive throughout the southwestern part of the United States.
I’m super excited about this great opportunity… I’ll be sitting at the edge of my seat hoping to get a glimpse! Viewing party, anyone?
