Congratulations to the San Antonio-based Mariachi Los Caporales who made it into Newsweek’s Special Edition on Selena that is currently on the newsstands now through July 14.
The photo, taken by San Antonio-based photographer Al Rendón, shows Los Caporales on a two-page spread posing with Selena backstage during the 1995 Tejano Music Awards.
Members from the original era of Mariachi Los Caporales shown in the photo include Chris De Léon, Roy Quintero, Raul Cuéllar, Miguel Guzmán, Juan Aldaco, Beto Espinoza, René Gutiérrez, Ismael Espinoza, Jesús Sosa and David Víllarreal.
“The 12-piece band took over the mariachi scene after being founded in 1993,” the cutline states.
To this day, Los Caporales continues to dominate the scene. They just arrived back home from a three-city tour in Kansas, where they accompanied famed mariachi singers Beatriz Adriana and Yolanda de Río.
The ensemble will not have much time to rest their instruments, as they will be departing for Moscow, Russia on June 9 to represent México y El Tri at the 2018 FIFA World Cup. This isn’t the first time Los Caporales has had the grand opportunity to see the world as they have performed in prior World Cups, including South Africa in 2010 and Brazil 2014.
This year they will be accompanying Mexican singer Edith Márquez, who will be performing hits such as “Nubes Negras,” “Quieres Ser Mi Amante,” “Mírame” and “Llamarada.” Other top-notch performers representing Mexico include iconic Banda El Recodo and rock group Molotov.
“When the promoter was putting together his company we had already performed for him many times,” Mariachi Los Caporales founder Roy Quintero said. “He told us back then — ‘one of these days I’m going to take you to every corner of the world,’ — and it’s true — it’s happening.”
The new era of 11 members representing Los Caporales, and leaving to Russia, include:
Roy Quintero- violin
Rhonda García – violin
Luis Jáuregui – violin
Manuel Vargas – violin
Aldo Gutiérrez – harp
César Jáuregui – trumpet
Javier Rubio – trumpet
Jesús Guerra – trumpet

Mariachi Los Caporales returns to San Antonio on July 6. Upon returning, they plan to celebrate their 25th anniversary.
Other mariachis in the edition are José Hérnandez and his guitarrón player from Mariachi Sol de México in 1994.

That’s amazing. So happy to hear of the success of this group after being part of history by just playing with Selena. All these years later and Los Corporales are still a group and traveling the world. ¡Arriba los mariachis!
SUPER CONGRATS!!! To Los Caporales Mariachi, we heard them two years ago on San Angelo, TX at a Museum Festival, and were sooo amazing. We were there on vacation. God bless you and keep doing so good.
