South Texas Award-winning Mariachi Groups to perform at Carnegie Hall

This June, the sounds of mariachi will fill one of the world’s most celebrated concert halls as talented student musicians take the stage at Carnegie Hall in New York City for Viva El Mariachi! Homenaje a la Música Mexicana.

Scheduled for June 9, 2026, at the historic Stern Auditorium / Perelman Stage, the performance will showcase a collection of outstanding mariachi programs dedicated to preserving and advancing the rich musical traditions of Mexico. Roma ISD, Grulla ISD and Valley View ISD will feature Mariachi Juvenil Del Sur, Mariachi Sol De Oro, Mariachi Grulla De Plata, Mariachi Nuevo Santander, Mariachi Santander JV, Mariachi Escandon, and Mariachi Juvenil Santander.

For these young musicians, the opportunity to perform at Carnegie Hall represents the culmination of years of hard work, dedication, and artistic growth. Recognized globally as one of the most prestigious performance venues in the world, Carnegie Hall has hosted some of history’s greatest musicians and ensembles. To perform on its stage is an honor reserved for artists who exemplify excellence in their craft.

Most of the participating ensembles are familiar names to the Mariachi Extravaganza community. Through years of participation in mariachi festivals, educational workshops, and competitive performance opportunities, these programs have demonstrated an unwavering commitment to musical excellence and cultural preservation. Their presence at Carnegie Hall is a reflection of the dedication shown by students, directors, parents, and communities who have invested in the continued growth of mariachi education.

Events such as our Mariachi Extravaganza have played a significant role in fostering opportunities for student musicians to develop their skills and gain valuable performance experience. Through competitions, master classes, and interactions with accomplished educators and professional musicians, students are challenged to reach new levels of artistry while deepening their understanding of the mariachi tradition.

The invitation to perform at Carnegie Hall highlights the remarkable progress of mariachi education across the United States. What was once viewed primarily as a regional folk tradition has evolved into a nationally recognized educational movement that continues to inspire students of all backgrounds. “We’ve been planning, fundraising and preparing for this trip for over a year,” says Alfonso Rodriguez, Mariachi Director for Grulla High School. “We thank our parents, school board members, school administrators and the community for supporting our students and this experience life-learning experience through travel and performance,” he added.

As the sounds resonate throughout Carnegie Hall, they will carry with them the stories of generations who have preserved this music and passed it on to future musicians. Every note performed will celebrate the enduring spirit of mariachi and the communities that continue to support its growth.

Viva El Mariachi! Homenaje a la Música Mexicana is presented by Texas Music Festivals Enterprise (TMF). TMF is a family owned business based in San Juan, Texas that offers travel opportunities, merchandise, awards and performance opportunities at many theme parks.

Alex Garcia is a senior studying pre-med at the University of Texas San Antonio. As a member of the MPR team, he served as stage right manager at the 31st Annual Mariachi Extravaganza and at the 2nd Annual Mariachi Extravaganza Las Vegas. He is a former member of UTSA’s Mariachi Los Paisanos and a current musician who competed at this year’s Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Mariachi Invitational with Mariachi Morado in collaboration with Mariachi Alma Nueva.
