Trio Los Reyes of San Antonio and Nayelli Peña of Grulla will perform in Amarillo, TX this weekend as part of the Amarillo Symphony’s Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration. Billed as “Celebraciones,” the show will feature Mariachi Extravaganza, award-winning Grand Champion vocalists Nayelli Peña, Trio Los Reyes, the Amarillo Symphony Youth Orchestra and Glenwood Elementary Dancers with George Jackson as the conductor.
Two concerts will take place at the Globe-News Center for the Performing Arts on Friday, October 13 and Saturday, October 14 in Amarillo, Texas.
About Nayelli
Nayelli Peña is an accomplished artist who has been winning awards in vocal competitions since the age of 13. She won first place in the Middle School Category of the Mariachi Extravaganza National Vocal Competition in 2013. Possessing a strong determination to be the best, she returned to San Antonio in 2021 and 2022, where she took the top prize of Grand Champion Vocal winner while a senior at Grulla High School. As a prize, Nayelli won a $5,000 scholarship and opened for Mariachi Nuevo Tecalitlán at the Lila Cockrell Theatre. Prior to winning Grand Champion at the Extravaganza, Nayelli won first place in the Nuestra Cultura Mariachi Association Competition in Brownsville in 2022 where she opened for Mariachi Los Camperos. She placed first this year at the UTRGV FESTIBA Vocal Competition in Edinburg where she opened for Mariachi Sol de México.
Nayelli comes from a long line of family musicians where her father, grandfather and uncle played Tejano music. She grew up singing corridos and rancheras with her father in Grulla, Texas and Nuevo León, Mexico. Nayelli’s experience of growing up in the U.S. and Mexico contributed to her appreciation of cultures on both sides of the border. “The cultures are pretty similar since Grulla is so close to Mexico and we spent a lot of time visiting my grandparents in Nuevo León,” says Nayelli.
Nayelli will perform with the Amarillo Symphony Youth Orchestra and Trío Los Reyes at the Globe-News Center for the Performing Arts in Amarillo, Texas as part of the symphony’s Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration on October 13 and 14. She performed at the Wortham Center’s – Brown Theater in Houston as part of their annual Mariachi Festival on Saturday, August 19, and was featured at the Tobin Center for the Performing Arts – Carlos Alvarez Theater – in San Antonio on Friday, June 30, as part of the Mariachi Extravaganza Summer Camp.
Nayelli Peña is proud of the Mexican heritage that introduced her to mariachi music and is currently attending UTRGV in Edinburg this fall.
About Trio Los Reyes
Trio Los Reyes is a trio with a great trajectory and history that makes it today, one of the best in the world. Its elements integrate the talents of all time great musicians and singers Raúl Puente, Ismael Rivera and Luis Villa.
Third voice and second guitar, Raúl Puente, is currently a legend of the music of the great trios of the world. He was the initiator and founder of the famous Trio Los Tres Reyes with his brother Gilberto Puente and with the first voice of Hernando Avilés, originally of Los Panchos. Los Panchos gained worldwide popularity in the 50’s and 60’s with songs like Ódiame, Poquita Fe, Decídete, Triángulo, Engañada, El almanaque and many more, selling millions of copies of all their music around the world.
Ismael Rivera is the second voice and requinto player. He is one of the best requintistas of Mexico in the world. Rivera had his beginnings in 1980 in the city of Monterrey, Mexico with the trios Delirio and Los Monarcas and Trio Los Clásicos de Monclova in the 90’s. From 1999 to date, Rivera resides in San Antonio where he represents and promotes this beautiful music with his requinto.
Luis Villa is one of the first voices today who had the opportunity to be with the great trios of Mexico in their last generation – Trio Los Tres Reyes (1996-2002). Trio Los Tres Reyes made musical history with a new record production “El Retorno de Los 3 Reyes” which included in this recording a duet with the queen of Tex-Mex “Selena” in the song “No me queda más.” Villa participated in 2014 with Trio Los Panchos in their 70th Anniversary tour in 25 cities throughout the country of Spain. He was the first voice of one of the most romantic trios in Mexico – Los Tres Ases – from 1991-95, prior to starting with the Trio Los Galantes from 1988-91.
Together Raúl Puente, Ismael Rivera and Luis Villa form a great trio with a current and modern sound, but with the essence and romanticism of the past.
