Palo Alto College to host Middle School Mariachi Competition

Palo Alto College is excited to announce its first-ever Palomino Mariachi Competition this fall, focusing on middle school mariachi groups! The competition is open to the first 15 groups to register, offering an incredible opportunity for 6th-8th grade students to gain valuable performance experience and prepare for high school and beyond.

Event Details:

  • Date: Friday, November 15, 2024
  • Time: 8:30 AM – 7 PM
  • Location: Palo Alto College, 1500 W. Villaret Blvd., San Antonio, TX

Purpose: According to Dr. Emma Dromgoole, Academic Program Director, “We’re focusing on middle school students to better prepare them for what they can expect in high school competitions.” Clinicians will provide feedback between performances, helping students improve and grow.

Special Guests:

  • John Lopez, newly appointed Mariachi Director with three decades of experience, will bring his vast knowledge to the event.
  • Judges: Michelle Quintero (Texas State University), Juan Ortiz (Campanas de America), and Daniel Cantu (SWISD Legacy High School).

Prizes:

  • 1st-3rd place trophies
  • Caption awards for outstanding ensembles
  • Grand prize: $500 and a trophy for the top overall ensemble, donated by Cynthia Muñoz, President of Muñoz Public Relations and Producer of the Mariachi Extravaganza. The Grand prize of $500 will be applied towards the registration for the Mariachi Extravaganza.

Registration:

  • Cost: $300 per group
  • Open to the first 15 groups that register here.
  • Groups have 5-7 minutes to perform
