Former Mariachi Extravaganza Grand Champion vocal winners will come together for a very special “Taste of the Mariachi Extravaganza” concert at the Cave Without a Name in Boerne on Saturday, November 7.

The all-star lineup features five exceptional vocalists who have earned Grand Champion honors at the Mariachi Extravaganza within the past decade:

Ashley Treviño and Allyson Contador from McAllen,
Lori Garza and Nayelli Peña from Rio Grande City, and
Jizelle Rodriguez from Kyle.

These young women represent some of the extraordinary vocal talent that has emerged from the Mariachi Extravaganza – the nation’s premier mariachi vocal competition. Each has distinguished herself on the Mariachi Extravaganza stage and has continued to pursue music, education and performance opportunities well beyond the competition.

Their journeys have taken them across the country, with performances in places including Greeley, Colorado; Detroit, Michigan; and Amarillo, Texas. Along the way, they have also received scholarships through the Mariachi Extravaganza to help support their college education.

Today, their accomplishments continue to grow. Jizelle Rodriguez is a recent graduate of Texas State University, while Ashley Treviño is a recent graduate of the University of Texas at Austin. Lori Garza is currently attending Texas A&M University–San Antonio, and Nayelli Peña is a student at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. Allyson Contador is a high school student at McAllen High School and the most recent Grand Champion Vocal Winner.

They will be accompanied by UTSA’s award-winning Mariachi Los Paisanos, who captured second place at last year’s Mariachi Extravaganza. The group performs under the musical direction of Michael Acevedo.

An Evening of Music, Culture and Tradition

There is no other concert experience quite like hearing mariachi music performed inside the Cave Without a Name. The natural acoustics of the cave create an unforgettable setting for live music and make every voice and instrument come alive.

For the past three years, MPR has presented quality Latino cultural arts programming at the Cave Without a Name, bringing exceptional artists and performers to audiences throughout the Hill Country. These concerts have consistently sold out, giving audiences an opportunity to experience outstanding Latino cultural arts programming close to home.

This November 7 performance offers a particularly special opportunity: five Mariachi Extravaganza Grand Champion vocalists—each with her own story, musical journey and distinctive voice—performing together on one stage.

Audiences will experience the beauty and power of mariachi music, spectacular performances and the vibrant cultural heritage that makes this tradition so meaningful to generations of families.

It is an evening celebrating music, culture, family and tradition—and a chance to experience some of the extraordinary young talent nurtured through the Mariachi Extravaganza.
