Congratulations to Texas State University (TSU), which on April 25 and 26 will celebrate the 15th anniversary of its Feria del Mariachi, in San Marcos, Texas.

During the celebration, Mexican singer, actor, and musician Lorenzo Negrete will receive the La Voz de Oro award. Lorenzo — grandson of legendary singer and actor Jorge Negrete — will perform accompanied by Texas State University’s award-winning Mariachi Nueva Generación.

Valente Rodríguez (Ernie from the George López Show) will serve as master of ceremonies. There will be plenty of entertainment, including Sebastién de la Cruz (“El Charro de Oro”) and three Mariachi Vargas Extravaganza “Best in the US” vocal competition winners who are TSU alumni: Celeste Curiel (2009), Celeste Ríos (2011), and Karen Zavala (2012).

Mariachi workshops and competitions will be held at the LBJ Student Center on the TSU campus. Participants will have the opportunity to audition for the first Texas all-state mariachi group, and those selected will receive personal instruction from seasoned instructors. Former Mariachi Vargas member Rigoberto Alfaro will lead the workshops.

The main concert will be held off campus at the Embassy Suites Hotel, located at 1001 E. McCarty Lane, San Marcos, TX. A VIP reception will take place prior to the concert. Tickets range from $10-$25 and can be purchased at www.txstatepresents.com.

Sponsors of this year’s Feria del Mariachi include Mr. Ken Blewett of San Marcos Dodge, Texas State University, San Marcos Arts Commission, Grande Communications, Univisión-Austin, and the Embassy Suites Hotel.
