Mark your calendar for the third annual Summer Mariachi Extravagan-za Vocal Camp, with Steeven Sandoval Pineda and Edwin Origel Méndez. Camp hours are 9:00 am to 4:00 pm on June 23-27, 2014, at the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center (GCAC) in San Antonio, Texas. A public recital featuring camp participants will take place at the CGAC Theater on Friday, June 28, at 7:00 pm.
The Mariachi Extravaganza Summer Vocal Camp consists of one full week of mariachi vocal instruction to help students strengthen vocal skills, develop technique, improve stage presence, and boost overall mariachi performance. Students will have the opportunity to sing in a group as well as develop individual style and technique in breakout sessions.
Students will learn from two of the best mariachi vocalists in the world — Steeven Sandoval Pineda and Edwin Origel Méndez of the renowned Mariachi Nuevo Tecalitlán. These two talented musicians, vocalists, and master instructors are back for the third year in a row to help students hone their skills. Gino Rivera, leader of Mariachi Azteca de América, will be on hand to assist as mariachi director at the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center.
The Summer Mariachi Extravaganza Vocal Camp began in 2012, with support from AHMSA International. AHMSA (Altos Hornos de México), a steel company based in Mexico, with offices in San Antonio, is well known for supporting cultural programs and building links between the US and Mexico. AHMSA’s support of the vocal camp is an extension of its strong support of the Mariachi Vargas Extravaganza. With AHMSA’s help, students will gain a better understanding of the music and culture of Mexico, and have an opportunity to interact and perform with others who share their passion for mariachi music.
The Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center is another key supporter of the camp. GCAC provides a theater, where the vocal camp is held, along with additional space for breakout sessions. The GCAC Theater is located at 1301 Guadalupe Street, in San Antonio.
Currently enrolled students from elementary through college levels are invited to participate in the Mariachi Extravaganza Summer Vocal Camp.
