Mariachi 7 Leguas was chosen as the top winner of “Sones de Mariachi por el Mundo,” a global competition that pays tribute to the excellence of mariachi music worldwide. The competition held earlier this year was organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, through the Instituto Mexicano del Exterior (IME) in commemoration of the Bicentenario of Mexico’s Independence and the Centenario of the Mexican Revolution.
Mariachi 7 Leguas competed against mariachi groups from 22 countries and won the title of “2010’s Best Mariachi” and the honor of performing in a two-week concert tour in Mexico City and cities in the states of Guanajuato, Jalisco, Veracruz and Zacatecas in September.
Mariachi 7 Leguas is a twelve-member group based in the Rio Grande Valley. The group was formed in 2005 by a well known, and highly respected, mariachi musician and leader in the mariachi music industry Emilio Santos, Jr. Group members include Cristian Rangel and Jaime Ochoa on trumpet, Adrian Perez on harp, Javier Torres on guitarron, Marco Torres on vihuela, Jose Rangel on guitar, and Abel Acuna, Martin Cantu, Joel Ozuna, Miguel Gutierrez, and Victor Galvan, along with Emilio Santos, on violin.
Mariachi 7 Leguas will attend San Antonio’s 16th Annual Mariachi Vargas Extravaganza as guest artists opening for Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlan. They will perform their award winning piece from the “Sones de Mariachi por el Mundo” competition and accompany Esteban Velasquez.
Mariachi 7 Leguas will conduct mariachi instrumental and vocal workshops, alongside members of Mariachi Vargas and other professional mariachi instructors, during San Antonio’s 16th Annual Mariachi Vargas Extravaganza.
