One-on-one vocal sessions with members of Mariachi Vargas and skilled vocal instructors will take place along with workshops addressing vocal technique and stage presentation. Students will have the opportunity to research their music and write and talk about the songs they are singing. The vocal camp will culminate with a viewing of the national PBS documentary “Mariachi High” airing Friday, June 29. The documentary includes many students who have participated in the Mariachi Vargas Extravaganza in the past as well as the Corpus Christi Mariachi Music Fest. A public presentation with all vocal camp participants will take place following the workshops.
This is the first year the Mariachi Vargas Extravaganza Summer Vocal Camp is being offered with support from AHMSA International, MATT.org, Texas A&M University, mariachimusic.com and San Antonio’s 18th Annual Mariachi Vargas Extravaganza.
The vocal camp will take place at Gillette Elementary at 1450 Gillette Blvd. in San Antonio. This is the original location for Texas A&M University’s San Antonio location. The University is now housed in their permanent home near Gillette Elementary. Vocal camp participants will have the opportunity to tour the brand new campus of Texas A&M University.
