Thanks to People en Espanol, students at local San Antonio schools will be getting an end of the school year celebration with a performance by Karen Zavala and her trio. Karen Zavala, originally from Laredo, Texas and now a student at Texas State University will be visiting Longfellow Middle School, Lanier High School and Jefferson High School on Tuesday (June 4) and  New Frontiers Charters School, Edgewood Fine Arts Academy and Somerset High School on Wednesday (June 5)! Karen was selected by the world’s preeminent Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlan as the “Best Mariachi Vocalist in the U.S” during the 18th Annual Mariachi Vargas Extravaganza last December. Since then, she was awarded a $2,000 scholarship from People En Español and the Houston Grand Opera and has opened for Mariachi Vargas in concerts in San Antonio and Ann Arbor, Michigan. She has also received an invitation to perform at Festival People En Español in San Antonio this September along with Texas State University’s award winning Mariachi Nueva Generacion.
