Experience the Splendor of the Mariachi Trumpet

Click here to listen to the original recording of  “Nola”  by Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán, with Miguel Martínez as  trumpet soloist

Experience the Splendor of the Mariachi Trumpet with Mariachi Vargas’ most recent trumpet player, Fernando Velásquez,
and the group’s very first trumpeter, Miguel Martínez.

Mariachi Vargas trumpeter Fernando Velásquez joins mariachi historian Jonathan Clark in an intergenerational tribute to maestro Miguel Martínez, who in 1942 became the first trumpeter to join Mariachi Vargas.

The Splendor of the Mariachi Trumpet is an educational, informative, and entertaining presentation on the role of the trumpet in the mariachi ensemble. This event is part of the 19th Annual Mariachi Vargas Extravaganza and will be held Wednesday, December 4 at 6:00 pm at the Instituto Cultural de México, 600 Hemisfair Plaza Way, San Antonio, TX 78205.

In June of 2008, Fernando became one of Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán’s three current trumpet players. He cites legendary trumpeter Miguel Martínez as his greatest musical influence. “The classic Mariachi Vargas recordings featuring Don Miguel are both the school and the teacher of mariachi trumpet style,” says Velásquez. “He literally wrote the book on mariachi trumpet performance.”

The Splendor of the Mariachi Trumpet marks the first time Mariachi Vargas’ trumpeter Fernando Velásquez, mariachi pioneer Miguel Martínez, and mariachi historian Jonathan Clark unite to give an educational presentation. This FREE lecture-concert precedes Mariachi Vargas’ gala concert on Dec. 7 at the Lila Cockrell Theater.

The Spendor of the Mariachi Trumpet is made possible by AHMSA International, Buchanan’s, Valero, West Music, TV AZTECA, Univision Radio, La Prensa, and Mariachimusic.com. Seating is limited. RSVPs are required in advance by calling (210) 227-0123.
