It’s official! Mariachi Vargas de Tecaliltlán will perform in Austin!

This historic concert will be held on Saturday, June 7 at 8:00 p.m., at the Long Center for the Performing Arts.

Local businesses have come together to bring back to Austin some of the greatest musicians and vocalists in the world. For one night only, Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán will perform a show titled MARIACHI VARGAS EN CONCIERTO at the Long Center’s Dell Hall, in the great city of Austin, Texas.

It’s been four years since Vargas has performed in the “Live Music Capital of the World.” But now—with support from local businesses like Casa García’s, Buchanan’s, Technology Capital Corporation’s Christy and David Guajardo Nance, Univisión 62, El Mundo newspaper, and MariachiMusic.com—El Mejor Mariachi del Mundo is back!

Mariachi Vargas will perform one concert only—it’s very first in Texas—with the group’s new musical director, Carlos Martínez. Carlos is the nephew of José “Pepe” Martínez, who served as the ensemble’s previous musical director for 38 years. I’m as excited as everyone else to hear the group under the new leadership of Carlos, who was musical director for the acclaimed Mariachi Nuevo Tecalitlán prior to joining Vargas. Join us in Austin and help welcome Carlos to Texas!

Opening for Vargas will be award-winning groups and vocalists from the Austin area, including Texas State University’s Mariachi Nueva Generación and Kyle, Texas native William “Carlton” Gálvez. William was selected as “Best Mariachi Vocalist in the U.S.” during the Mariachi Vargas Extravaganza. William recently performed his award-winning song “Júrame” at the Majestic Theater during the San Antonio Symphony’s Fiesta Pops concert, where San Antonio Express-News music critic Hector Saldaña described his performance as a “stun-gun moment.”

Pack your bags and start planning now for a great summer weekend to include lunch at Austin’s favorite Mexican food restaurant, Casa García’s, at 1901 W. William Cannon Drive. After that, hop on a canoe and enjoy Town Lake, or visit the Texas State Capitol. There’s so much to enjoy in Austin—especially Vargas’ only stop in Texas this summer!!

Tickets go on sale Wednesday, May 7th at 10 a.m., at the Long Center 3M Box Office, thelongcenter.org, or by phone at (512) 474-5664.
