Mariachi Nueva Generación’s winning performance at last year’s Mariachi Vargas Extravaganza.
Winners of last year’s 20th Annual Mariachi Vargas Extravaganza received a total of $5,000 in scholarships and grants. Schools and individual recipients may use these funds for college scholarships and/or to support the continued study of mariachi music.
Awards are based on funding received from sponsors and attendees of the group and vocal competitions. Muñoz Public Relations (MPR) is pleased to announce these awards, totaling $5,000, to the following winners:
MARIACHI GROUP COMPETITION
Mariachi Nueva Generación: $1,000
Texas State University — San Marcos, TX
Mariachi Nuevo Santander: $1,000
Roma High School — Roma, TX
Mariachi Escandón de Santander: $1,000
Roma Middle School — Roma, TX
MARIACHI VOCAL COMPETITION
Jackie Barrera: $1,025
Best Mariachi Vocalist in the U.S.
Mónica Fogelquist: $250
1st place — College/University, vocal category
Clyde Guerra: $250
1st place — High School, vocal category
Brook Talk: $250
1st place — Middle School, vocal category
Felipe “Pike” Romero: $175
1st & 2nd places — Original Songwriting Competition
Cassandra Trejo: $50
3rd place — Original Songwriting Competition
A total of $22,500 has been awarded in scholarships and grants to Mariachi Vargas Extravaganza competition winners in the past four years ($5,000 in 2014, $10,000 in 2013, $7,500 in 2012, and $1,000 in 2011). In addition, selected winners have received more than $30,000 in prizes to perform in cities like Ashland, Oregon and Ann Arbor, Michigan. In total, more than $50,000 has been awarded to Mariachi Vargas Extravaganza winners in cash and prizes since 2011.
