ANAHEIM, CA (July 8, 2019). Maestro José Hernández’ 8th annual Mariachi Nationals and Summer Institute return to Southern California July 31 through August 4, featuring singing sensation Ana Bárbara as guest instructor who will lead a Master Class on Song Interpretation and Showmanship. The Mariachi Nationals is a series of immersive music workshops for young boys and girls that help them to improve their mariachi skills, taught by José Hernández and members of his world-famous Mariachi Sol de México and America’s first all-female professional mariachi ensemble Mariachi Reyna de Los Angeles.
“I founded the Mariachi Nationals because I wanted to teach young kids the value of mariachi music and to carry on its legacy for future generations,” says José Hernández. “But it’s much more than that. This curriculum also helps them with discipline, self-esteem and to generally become well-rounded individuals.”
There’s also an optional adjudicated festival with cash awards bestowed to outstanding participants in several categories. In addition, a José Hernández Signature Series Vihuela, Guitarrón and Guitar will be donated by West Music. The winners will have an opportunity to perform during Mariachi Sol de México’s concert “Viva El Mariachi!” at Orange County Fair on Sunday, August 4th.Viva El Mariachi is a brand new show featuring superstar Ana Bárbara bringing the best of Mexican Mariachi music to Orange County Fair’s Pacific Amphitheatre. The group has performed for more than 20 years at Orange County Fair, typically on The Hanger stage but this year, the show moves to the bigger Pacific Amphitheatre venue. The line-up also includes the all-female Mariachi Reyna de Los Angeles founded by José Hernández and recently inducted into the Smithsonian Institute, the group is known as the best female mariachi in the world. ABOUT JOSÉ HERNÁNDEZ:
José Hernández is an eight-time Grammy Award nominee and a master of mariachi music. He is a world-renowned musician, composer and music educator who also travels year-round teaching the art of mariachi music to new generations at schools across the United States and Mexico. He is founder of the world-famous Mariachi Sol de México and America’s first all-female professional mariachi ensemble Mariachi Reyna de Los Angeles.
José is a fifth-generation mariachi whose passion is to bring mariachi music to audiences around the world. In addition to leading two mariachi ensembles, he works tirelessly to inspire and empower the next generation of musicians through the educational initiatives he has founded: The José Hernández’ Mariachi Nationals and Summer Institute, a mariachi music Summer intensive and competition which brings together some of the country’s top student mariachi ensembles and the Mariachi Heritage Society, which teaches mariachi music and folk dancing to new generations. José is also the Musical Director of several prestigious mariachi festivals.
José continues to advance the art of mariachi music with daring new compositions and arrangements. His latest and sixteenth CD, Leyendas de mi Pueblo was nominated for both a Latin Grammy and a Grammy. It is an homage to the great Mexican mariachi music icons Jorge Negrete, Pedro Infante, José Alfredo Jiménez, Miguel Aceves Mejía, Javier Solís and Vicente Fernández. He has composed, arranged and provided music for all sixteen Mariachi Sol de México albums. He sings and plays trumpet, violin, guitarrón, and vihuela. He has performed in prestigious venues around the world and recorded with some of the most respected names in the music industry including Selena, Vicente Fernández, Lola Beltrán, Juan Gabriel, Luis Miguel, Bryan Adams and the Beach Boys.
José’s musical inspirations are rich and diverse, ranging from Agustín Lara to José Alfredo Jiménez. One of José’s proudest achievements is establishing the Sol de México symphony orchestra, bringing this powerful and vibrant sound to mariachi lovers around the world.
