Mariachi Extravaganza Summer Camp Registration opens Feb. 7!

The 9th Annual Mariachi Extravaganza Summer Camp and Recital will take place Monday, June 22 – Friday, June 26 at the Tobin Center for the Performing Arts – Carlos Alvarez Theater.  The camp is open to all students from throughout the U.S. who are interested in developing their skills primarily in performance and voice. Participants will perform in a concert featuring soloists and group performances.

The camp is led by professional artists who possess unique skills needed for mariachi performance. Past Mariachi Extravaganza Camp maestros include the Tucson, Arizona based baritone Octavio Moreno and sopranos Vanessa Alonso, from Houston, New York City based Christina Maxwell, and San Antonio based mariachi Debra Torres, all accomplished vocalists and performers.

The camp attracts some of the nations most devoted mariachi students, dedicated to honing and perfecting their craft. A week of working one-on-one with instructors and in groups, choreography and stage presence results in a breathtaking finale recital on Friday, June 26 at 7 p.m in the Carlos Alvarez Studio Theater, where every vocalist is showcased in their own unique way. Students who are interested in learning about various aspects of stage production, promotion and marketing are encouraged to register.

While many of the students attend the camp, to prepare for competitions, the camaraderie on stage is undeniable.  Donned in traditional and colorful mariachi trajes and outfits, the students give new meaning to a centuries-old musical legacy, giving it their all on stage, whether as soloists or in a full mariachi choir.
