A LIVE concert featuring Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán will be held at the Joe Freeman Coliseum in San Antonio this Friday, October 16 at 8PM. The event will be a drive-in concert in effort to ease our way back into the live concert experience slowly and safely.
The concert will feature the 14-piece, Mexico City-based Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán. As many of our mariachimusic.com readers know, Mariachi Vargas has deep roots in San Antonio having performed in the city’s first mariachi music festival in 1979, and for the past 25 years as part of the Mariachi Vargas Extravaganza. Fans can expect to hear Mariachi Vargas perform songs from their latest recordings on an elevated stage complete with lighting, sound and video screens in their first drive-in concert ever. Mariachi Vargas is widely known in the U.S. for their numerous recordings, live concerts and tours with popular artists such as Linda Ronstadt during her “Canciones de Mi Padre” tour and Luis Miguel during his “Mexico Por Siempre” Tour.
This live outdoor concert will take the place of Mariachi Vargas’ annual concert held at the Lila Cockrell Theater as part of the 26th Annual Mariachi Vargas Extravaganza in December due to COVID-19. Concert attendees will have the option of watching the concert from their vehicles or bringing chairs and placing them outside their vehicle. Vehicles are spaced 10 feet a apart and attendees may also bring their own food and drinks. Hand wash stations will be positioned near the port-o-potties which will be sanitized throughout the evening. See the attached tip sheet on how to enjoy an outdoor concert experience.
Members of Mariachi Vargas will begin arriving early this week in preparation for a full week of workshops and competitions that will go online this year as part of the 26th Annual Mariachi Vargas Extravaganza. Mariachi Vargas members will be leading Zoom classes with schools, and recording audio and video podcasts and tutorials in effort to create online materials to help mariachi music educators and students with online learning.

Concert Tickets range from $100 – $300 per vehicle with up to four people and can be purchased at LJConciertos.com. The Mariachi Vargas concert is produced by L.J. Productions and La Gran Audiencia in association with Muñoz Public Relations (MPR), producers of the annual Mariachi Vargas Extravaganza. Opening for Mariachi Vargas will be San Antonio’s very own Mariachi Azteca de América, performing under the direction of Gino Rivera.
