San Antonio, Texas…The Mariachi Extravaganza is a weeklong music festival with more than a dozen events featuring extraordinary performances with talented young artists from throughout the nation. Over 1,000 mariachi musicians will convene in San Antonio November 26 – December 2 to participate in the largest event of its kind.
The Mariachi Extravaganza hosts the largest competitions in the U.S. for competitive mariachi.
Events include the highly anticipated National Mariachi Group and Vocal Competitions and an Original
Songwriting Competition featuring top-level, school-based and collegiate mariachi groups and
vocalists from Texas, Nevada, California, Utah and Washington State.
Additional events include a mariachi-themed Art Exhibit and reception at the UTSA Southwest
Campus, a Mariachi Mass at Our Lady of the Lake University’s Sacred Heart Chapel and the
popular Serenata en el Río on the River walk. Fan favorites are the National Group Competition, the National Vocal Competition and the High School Finals held back-to-back on Saturday, December 2 starting at 9:00 a.m. at the Lila Cockrell Theatre.
The highlight of the festival is a concert featuring competition winners and one of the most
renowned mariachi groups across the globe – Mariachi Nuevo Tecalitlán. Based in
Guadalajara, Jalisco, the group has released well over 75 albums since they were founded in
1965 and have performed with numerous symphonies and in mariachi music festivals and
concerts throughout the world. Featured vocalist Jonathan Palomar will perform as a guest artist
with the award-winning Mariachi Aztlán. Showtime is 7:30 pm on Saturday, December 2 at the

The Mariachi Extravaganza was founded in 1995 with a mission to promote higher education
and cultural preservation among Hispanic youth. Scholarships, grants and travel and
performances opportunities are provided to competition winners with more than $30,000
