The Mariachi Extravaganza Summer Vocal Camp is set for June 24 – 28, 2024 in San Antonio. The camp is open to all students interested in honing their skills in mariachi voice. New to this year’s camp are professional development classes for mariachi directors!
The Mariachi Extravaganza Summer Vocal Camp is an extension of the Mariachi Extravaganza – host to the national mariachi group and vocal competitions in San Antonio. The camp is designed to prepare students interested in competing in the 30th Annual Mariachi Extravaganza National Vocal Competition December 5-7. Students interested in growing their knowledge of mariachi music are also welcomed to participate.
Students will have the opportunity to spend a full week learning from master vocal instructors, working together as a team to create a public performance and meeting new people and making new friends. Instructors will dive into the categories in which students are judged in the Mariachi Extravaganza vocal competition, learn tips and techniques that can help strengthen vocal skills and gain a better understanding on what it takes to put together a show. Students will work in private sessions with master instructors and in group settings.
An exceptional group of master vocal instructors will be on hand to work with students this year. They include:
Octavio Moreno of Tucson, Arizona
Vanessa Alonzo of Houston, Texas
Jonathan Palomar from Mexico City
Alexa Posas of Roma, Texas
New to this year will be professional development workshops (PD workshops) for mariachi music educators. PD workshops will be held Thursday, June 27 from 9 am – 12 noon. The workshops will offer helpful tools for mariachi directors when teaching mariachi voice in the classroom and are made possible through a collaborative initiative between Muñoz Public Relations, producers of the 30th Annual Mariachi Extravaganza and Mariachi Extravaganza Summer Camp, and CULTIVAR.
Workshops for students ages 12 – 25 will be held M-F from 9 am – 4 pm June 24 – 28. Both PD and student workshops will be held at the Tobin Center for the Performing Arts Carlos Alvarez Studio Theater. Early registration is now open and runs through May 31st. Registration fees increase during late registration which runs June 1-10th.
