Another important element of the Mariachi Extravaganza is the recognition of groups or individuals for their significant contributions to the mariachi music genre. Each year, an honoree is selected and recognized during the Mariachi Extravaganza in an effort to promote historical awareness of mariachi music. Past honorees include filmmakers Sam and Alejandra Vasquez. They are the producers of “Going Varsity in Mariachi” currently airing on Netflix.
There are many local families who have contributed to the growth and preservation of mariachi music who have also been honored. They include the Jesse and Josephine Orta Family, The Moreno Family and the López family. Former members of Mariachi Vargas such as Miguel Martínez, Federico Torres, José “Pepe” Martínez Sr., Víctor “Pato” Cárdenas and Rigoberto Mercado, have also been honored.
