Another important element of the Mariachi Vargas Extravaganza is the recognition of significant contributions to the mariachi music tradition. Each year, a group or individual is honored and recognized during the Mariachi Vargas Extravaganza in an effort to promote historical awareness of mariachi music. Past honorees include the Orta, Moreno and López families; as well as former Mariachi Vargas members Miguel Martínez, Federico Torres, José “Pepe” Martínez Sr., Víctor “Pato” Cárdenas and Rigoberto Mercado.
