The world renowned Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán performs in concert as part of the Mariachi Vargas Extravaganza. The 7-day mariachi music festival host more than a dozen entertaining and culturally enriching mariachi-themed events from December 1-7.
The Mariachi Vargas Extravaganza attracts the best mariachi groups and vocalists from both the U.S and Mexico. Young, talented and college-bound mariachi students gather to participate along with seasoned professionals. It’s a creative gathering of nearly 1,000 mariachi musicians and vocalists who represent the best in the world. Artists and musicians showcase their talents in fierce mariachi group and vocal competitions and an original songwriting contest. Numerous mariachi-themed events are held throughout the week including art exhibits, public performances and library presentations. The festival culminates with a concert featuring award-winning mariachi groups and vocalists and the world’s preeminent Mariachi Vargas de Tecaltilán on Saturday, December 7 at the Lila Cockrell Theater at 7:30 p.m.
Mariachi Vargas de Tecaltilán is the namesake of the Mariachi Vargas Extravaganza which is in its 19th year as the largest and longest running mariachi music festival in Texas. The event began in 1979 in effort to preserve and promote the music, the culture and the traditions of Mexico. It continued through the early 80s, then came to a halt, and returned in 1995. The event has been ongoing for 19 consecutive years and continues to promote cultural preservation and higher education among Hispanic youth.
The 19th Annual Mariachi Vargas Extravaganza is made possible with support from Altos Hornos de Mexico, S.A. de C.V. (AHMSA International). AHMSA has the largest integrated steel plant in Monclova, Coahuila, Mexico with offices in San Antonio.
