Mariachi Extravaganza Competition winners to receive grants and prizes

Special thanks to this year’s Mariachi Vargas Extravaganza sponsors and patrons for contributing towards scholarships and grants for mariachi group and vocal competition winners and winners of the original songwriting competition. With the help of AHMSA InternationalBuchanan’s, Valero, Festival People en Español and nearly a dozen individual contributors, Mariachi Vargas Extravaganza winners will be awarded scholarships and grants this year.
Last year, Mariachi Vargas Extravaganza competition winners shared $10,000 in cash and prizes thanks to sponsors. We hope the total amount awarded this year will be the same or greater. Individual contributors are also helping to fund these scholarships and grants. They include Dr. Ellen Clark from the University of Texas at San Antonio; Romeo Garza, owner of Los Laureles Restaurant and Garza Pharmacy; Dallas-based attorney Nyria Melchor; volunteers Irma and Jesus Muñoz; longtime mariachi aficionados John and Nancy Oliphant; Miguel Guevara owner of DJ Diamond Mike; and business owner Charles Timms, Timms Trucking and Excavating, LTD.
To date, the Mariachi Vargas Extravaganza has contributed over $100,000 towards educational programs. Much of these funds supported Ford Motor Company’s Salute to Education program back in the early days. Dozens of high school mariachi students in South Texas received scholarships through the Ford Salute to Education program. Now with support from this year’s sponsors and patrons, awards are granted directly to winning schools and students.
Please contact 210-225-2233 for information on becoming a Mariachi Vargas Extravaganza sponsor or patron. Secure your sponsorship today and your name will be included in the “Sponsors and Patrons page” in the Mariachi Vargas Concert program.
Thank you for your continuous support of the Mariachi Vargas Extravaganza.
